Technology as Knowledge:
Technology has brought several new innovations to the care of cardiac patients. One example that comes to mind is patient’s that have heart disease, specifically coronary artery disease. The heart depends on blood supply from the coronary arteries to deliver oxygen. Blockage of those arteries can result in ischemia, leading to a heart attack(MI). Procedures that once required open heart surgery and a lengthy hospital stay can now be done on an out-patient basis. This is done by advances in technology, which allows a stent to be placed to open the blockage. This new technology has given cardiologist the knowledge to reduce hospital stay, recovery time, cost, and mortalities. Without this knowledge of technology, we would not have this advancement.

It still amazes me to, imagine a procedure that in depth done with a little catheter and some imaging. Sometimes, I feel people use these advances as a crutch. For example have you ever heard someone say, by the time something is wrong with me, they’ll have found a cure for that.

  2. Ramona,
Are you going to tackle advancements in technology in the cardiac field? I think that would very interesting. There have been so many advancements in technology in the cardiac field. They often don't even do "open heart" surgery any more. The advancements just in the surgery techniques are amazing. Barb

  3. Cardiology is sooo fascinating to me! The ED I am at is an accredited CP and Stroke center. We are very focused on maintaining our 90 minute goal for acute MI's to make it to the cath lab. Many of our patients do outstanding with our ability to recognize and treat our MI's. I know the American Heart Association has lots of information on both stroke and heart attacks. In addition to cath lab, we are also beginning the process of having protocols in place for cooling patients who are resuscitated post cardiac arrest and stroke. Just a few thoughts!
